How Do Awards 2010 – the winners
Unfortunate timings might have put the annual north west awards ceremony up against the Leaders’ Debate but, thanks to the wonders of twitter, the ‘ow dos became a second must-have back channel event last night.
Several hundred of the region’s most influential media and creative industries folk attended the awards dinner with around 75 companies shortlisted for the 14 awards.
Congratulations to all those who walked away with awards – the Best Media Website (TheBusinessdesk.com) and Best Newspaper (Crains Manchester Business and the Westmorland Gazette) particularly caught my eye but the full list of winners can be found here.

The newly-appointed digital publishers are now adjusting site content in a way which Northcliffe Digital says "better serve the needs of visitors at different times of the day and at weekends."

"The solution I’d come up with was pretty simple, but seemed like it would have legs, and more to the point be easy to use: the pingbacks that WordPress and many other blogging systems send out (unknown to most users) when they link to another website."
Kinofilm European Short Film Festival is finally back next week
Guest blogger David Hartley (no known relation!) invites you along to next week’s Kinofilm European Short Film Festival.
“If you’ve not got the time to watch a full-length film, watch a short one instead,”
So said Orson Welles, privately to me just before he died (honest…). Unfortunately, Orson, I replied, there aren’t many opportunities to watch short films these days except if they’re shoehorned into the special features bit of disc two of the special edition DVD behind an Easter Egg and a password.
Come to think of it, I for one would much prefer two or three quirky shorts before the main feature at the movies instead of those annoying Orange ‘mowbill’ adverts. What I want is a festival where I can see lots of short films at accessible venues, in a range of genres, maybe from lots of different European countries…
That being said, its a good thing the Kinofilm Festival has returned. After a three year hiatus, Manchester’s premiere European short film festival is back kick-starting on the 27th April straight through a jam-packed week of the best UK and European short films, until the 2nd May.
Kinofilm has gathered a strong reputation in the city it its 15 year existence and shows no sign of deviating this year with a programme featuring over 200 shorts, 8 feature films (including Oscar-nominated Revanche and critically acclaimed UK film Kandahar Break) and a series of educational sessions for budding film-makers. Cinematographer Tristan Oliver (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Chicken Run) will be conducting a masterclass, and if you fancy yourself as the next Cary Grant or Helen Mirran, try out your best movie-star pose at the Acting workshop.
This year there is a special focus on Polish films in conjunction with an exhibition of Polish movie posters featuring the incredible artwork of designers such as Wiktor Gorka and Andrzej Krajewski.
The exhibition was launched last night and will continue until the 16th May. Head down to the basement of the Triangle Shopping Centre to feast your hungry eyes. As ever, there is a Facebook group to join to keep abreast of the latest developments and if you are super-keen, Early Bird festival passes are available now from Eventbrite for a measly £25. Get ‘em while they’re hot, cinephiles!
Find out more at the Kinofilm website.
Thanks to David for the guest post – if you’ve got a project or event going on in Manchester and would like to publicise it here on Mancunian Way, please do get in touch through the comments below or by email sarahmancunianway AT googlemail.com.

CitySourced is an application that allows users to instantly submit an instance of any municipal issue that should be addressed by city authorities. Aiming to make the process as simple as possible, the application asks only that users submit a geotagged image of the problem within a specified category, adding a quick description if desired; the reports are then distributed to the appropriate municipal agencies for action.

Content has never been a rival good and recent technological progress has made it, for all intents and purposes, non-excludable. It's time to face the music: Content is a public good.

For example, it was interesting to hear how one London based commercial website sells advertising, in a much more competitive environment than Leith – and makes a lot more from it than Greener Leith does! And similarly, the opportunity to do a little informal benchmarking with peer sites, and learn about 'market research' techniques was also really interesting.
-
This section, therefore, is for people to find out how to learn more advanced skills, or ask someone technically-minded for help. The TAL team and anyone else working with offline communities can also use these resources to ‘translate’ community issues into the sorts of problems with parameters that developers love to get their teeth into. We don’t want to reinvent any wheels, so please use this very simple and friendly questionnaire to ensure we’re not missing anything that already exists, or if you prefer dive straight into the editable Google document of this page to add content.
-
And as if this wasn’t enough, we have also been selected by the widely read American site blogs.com as one of their top ten “cool hyperlocal blogs”. In fact, we’re the only British site to make the list! Once again, we’re very pleased to be recognised in this way.

Ploughing through Council minutes and agendas can be time consuming but unearth really useful local information. Actually attending Council committees and meetings of the Local Strategic Partnership can give you a first-hand insight into local issues and decision-making. Keeping track of Council planning Committees and sub-committees, by online and/or physical means, is another useful activity routinely carried out by journalists. Making full use of information released under FOI (the Freedom of Information Act) and actually making FOI requests is another useful activity that can often result in stories from a differnt 'expose' angle.
Talk About Local and Guardian Local Unconference award winners
and the winner’s were……….
The following publishers of hyperlocal blogs, journalists and data junkies received (un)awards at an (un)glittering ceremony held down the pub following yesterday’s (un)conference.
While the light-hearted prizes themselves (including a broken walking stick, mugs and a very fetching plastic Marilyn) may be relatively worthless, the reasons for the awards, and the sincerity behind acknowledging achievement in these areas, shouldn’t be diminished.
The awards which were presented – with typical aplomb – by William Perrin from TAL were;
- Overall winner – Ventnor Blog
- Best Hyperlocal Story Vestas industrial dispute – Ventnor blog
- Best investigation – HelpMeInvestigate which motivated BCCDIY.
- Best community engagement – w14London.
- The UnTourist Board Award for a site that attracts visitors to a place – Parwich.org
- Most innovative use of data Lichfield council Stuart Harrison aka pezholio.
- Best use of audio Mr Caulkhead Isle of Wight colloquialisms.
- Best use of photography 4am project Karen Strunks
- The Hyperlocal Extreme Award for thrilling, breathtaking or dangerous examples of innovation in a small area kingstonblackboard.org – for issues around xmas lights
- Lulz Award for site, project or individual that made us laugh - Glum Councillors.
With thanks to those that support us….
Best support to hyperlocal bloggers Paul Bradshaw – for excellent academic support
UK Hyperlocal Favourite Tool Fix My StreetAnd those that don’t….
Best attack by traditional media Hull Daily Mail
I was very happy to handover the following awards to people who have made a significant contribution in their area;
- Most Inspirational site went to Josh Halliday for firing up young journalists with his doorstep project SR2.
- Best local special interest website Greener Leith for its dedication to the local environment north of the border.
- Best use of video East Salford direct tv - not just because there’s a general shortage of Mancunians in loud shirts on mainstream telly, but also because they do, as they say ‘ride the recession like a Blackpool donkey!’
- Best use of a map – Openly Local for the hyperlocal map which tracks us all.
- Best council coverage for PitsnPots by Tony Walley and Mike Rawlins for the site’s dogged Stoke City council coverage.
The awards finished a day which saw independent publishers coming from as far north as Edinburgh, as far south as the Isle of Wight and as far west as Cardiff.
It was a day of intelligent conversation, debate and lively catch-up. You can re-cap on the debates at the liveblog from myself and the beatbloggers here;
And I’ve already spotted these different takes on the event too;
- Notes from Citizen Sheep.
- Notes from Guardian Cardiff beatblogger Hannah Waldram.
- A bit of video from John Popham.
- Lessons for museums in engaging with bloggers, Alex Hartley.
Plus I’ve started this Twitter list of all those who attended http://twitter.com/#/list/foodiesarah/tal10 if you’re missing, please do let me know.
Finally, there’s a few people I wanted to say a public thank you to for making the event run so smoothly – Linda and Holly at ntiLeeds, the entire TAL team and finally, let’s not forget the foodies, Bagel Nash, Leeds for a splendid lunch spread.

For those who couldn't make it – or those who could, but had to sit through the Keynote hell I unleashed – here's the presentation as it SHOULD have appeared…
Podcasting, Vodcasting and Mobile Journalism -
If commenters were asked to provide their real names for display online, some would no doubt give false identities, and verifying them would be too labor-intensive to be realistic. But news executives say that merely making the demand for a name and an e-mail address would weed out much of the most offensive commentary.
Several industry executives cited a more fundamental force working in favor of identifying commenters. Through blogging and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, millions of people have grown accustomed to posting their opinions — to say nothing of personal details — with their names attached, for all to see. Adapting the Facebook model, some news sites allow readers to post a picture along with a comment, another step away from anonymity.
